July Meeting

Longarm meeting is right around the corner - July 16th at 10 am at the Handiquilter building! (Thanks for being so awesome!)

Remember - we don't have mtg in September because of Quilt Fest.  Our next meeting will be November 15!

May Minutes

** Please sign up for Smiths Rewards and choose Utah Quilt Guild as your recipient.

If you are interested in also joining the Utah Quilt Guild - pay dues online and card is emailed to you after you pay. At the meeting, they were still looking for a Davis County Rep. You should have received your Quilt Fest Booklet. Registration is going on now.

Christmas Stocking Fundraiser - buy a stocking for $5, decorate it and donate it. You will be entered into a drawing for a sewing machine. Read their newsletter online for more info on these items.

Our guest speaker was, Donna Valdez, from Quilts of Valor. She taught the history of Quilts of Valor. Some interesting points to me are - the quilt is similar to a purple heart in the selection of the recipient. Quilts are picked specifically for each person. The quilt presentation is often the beginning of their healing. Each part of the quilting process represents something - the back is strength, the stitches are all the people that served and the binding is the future of the individual.

A quote from the QoV website - I knew a Quilt of Valor had to be a quality-made quilt, not a “charity quilt.” Quilts of Valor would be the civilian equivalent of a Purple Heart award. A Quilt of Valor had to be quilted, not tied, which meant hand or machine quilting. Quilts of Valor would be “awarded,” not just passed out like magazines or videos. A Quilt of Valor would say unequivocally, “Thank you for your service, sacrifice, and valor” in serving our nation in combat.

Check out their website - it is awesome! If you can build and donate a quilt we can get you in touch with the foundation.

Speaker: Nancy Allen
Thanks for the beautiful trunk show and the history of making your book, “Triple Play Scrap Quilting”. It shows 3 different approaches to quilting. 1. A planned color scheme. 2. Using a fabric collection. 3. Scrappy. It was fun and informative. Nancy suggests looking on thousandsofbolts.com for backing fabrics. Another good resource is quiltshops.com. It finds all the shops that carry a line you are looking for.

Reporting on our red and white quilting day

We had great fun and got lots done. We need another quilting day to sew it into blocks and then sew the blocks together. We had tentatively planned on April 30th and Diane had volunteered her house. After the very successful day we had at the church that Nancy had scheduled for us, it was decided that that location was ideal, in terms of parking and ease of access. So Nancy is trying to get that church on the 30th of April so we can work some more on this.

Quilt Fest:
Theme is Christmas. Buy a $5 stocking to decorate and donate. There will be a drawing for a sewing machine for contributors. The stockings with be donated to children.

November Meeting

YES!! We’re having our meeting this Saturday!

Even though the esteemed Ricky Timms is in town, we still need to have our meeting.

We will be having a Guild Trunk Show. Please bring your favorite quilt(s), and tell us why it’s your favorite. We want to concentrate on Christmas quilts, but your favorite is more important. It can be either a quilt you quilted, or a quilt you received of bought from someone else. More than one if you like.

We will also have a discussion on our bylaws.

Don’t forget your potluck refreshments! It is your chance to show off your shopping…er…cooking skills to the rest of us.

We will still be having our regular show and tell, I always get so many good ideas from you all that it’s something I would hate to miss.

I’m sure there will be announcements from many different sources, i.e. Utah Quilt Guild, Quilts of Valor, etc.

We will also have a questionnaire to fill out about what you would like to do in the coming year.

Hope to see you there!
