Spring update

Our March 17th meeting was packed full of information.  We heard from Deonn Stott, who showed us her 3 quilts which will be featured in her HMQS classes that she will be teaching in  May. They are : Cartenter's Star, and Soldier's Star quilts, and Hunter Star Tree Skirt. These classes sound like a lot of fun, I hope you will consider signing up for one of them. Kathryn Lindsey shared with us her print outs of sashings and borders. Thank- you so much for the sketches! I have already used quite a few of them. I'm keeping them where I can refer to them often.

Our block design of the month was the Log Cabin. Our guild members shared their ideas for quilting this popular quilt and Kathryn taught us how to use Lisa Calle's design article from Machine Quilter Magazine. We learned how to fill the blank areas on a quilt. Lastly Diane Jaegar told us about her involvement with Quilts of Valor. We learned how we can become involved with this organization, which provides veterans with beautiful homemade machine quilted quilts.

And we were given the opportunity to work on a QOV quilt that Diane had set up on a Handi-Quilter machine right there in the room with us (just one of the many perks we enjoy because of our wonderful hosts). It seems like we never have enough time when we all get together. I actually forgot  to have the ladies do show and tell at the end of the meeting, and that is always the favorite part of guild meetings! So, please forgive me. See you all in May!

HANDI QUILTER
445 North 700 West
North Salt Lake, Utah

Gaye Ryon, our VP  will be talking about some of the things a judge looks at when she sees your quilt, which is good to know when you are preparing to enter a quilt contest such as HMQS.

Also, Ann Collett will talk to us about the new theme, Star Spangled, and the charity they have chosen to support this year.

We would like to finish up with dues for the 2012 year, so prepare to pay $15 for that if you haven't yet.
When you bring a quilt to show the group we want to have them displayed as soon as you walk in, so we will encourage you to lay your quilt or quilts out on tables that will be designated for that purpose. This will allow people more time to view them.

I wanted to bring back the block of the month idea share, so this time we will be looking for your ideas to stitch the Ohio Star.

Fall updates and info

Thanks to everyone that joined us at the September meeting. We had great food and it was fun getting to know everyone there. We all come from different backgrounds, but we all share a common love of quilting!

Here is some info that was passed on recently...

On November 17, at 7PM, book author Jennifer Chiaverini (author of Elm Creek Quilt Series books) will be at theSouth Branch library in Bountiful to speak.  Rosalie Taylor asked if any of our guild members had made any of the quilts or even quilt blocks in any of Jennifer's books.

I told her I didn't know, but would ask that the question be passed on to our guild members.

Rosalie Taylor's cell phone number is 801-540-8092, if there are any members that have quilts or blocks they would like to loan to be shared during the event.

Also check out this link I got from a young fan of our club, there are some great tips here.

September meeting coming up on the 17th

Getting to Know You

Our meeting on Saturday will be a “Getting to Know You – Potluck”.  Please bring any dish you want and be prepared to tell us a little about yourself.  There have been so many new members and we want to get to know everyone.  Some things you might be thinking about:

  1. 1.     Why did I buy or want to buy a longarm machine?
  2. 2.     How did I talk my husband into this? (If you don’t have a husband just ignore.)
  3. 3.     What kind of machine do you have or want?
  4. 4.     Do your work for customers?
  5. 5.     Did you really think you would be able to quilt your own quilts?
  6. 6.     Where did you put your machine?
  7. 7.     Anything else you would like to share.

We would also like to do some “brain storming” for next year’s meetings.  Is there anything you would like to learn or discuss?  Do you know of anyone that would be willing to be a guest speaker at one our meetings?  We are open to any and all ideas and suggestions.

The DATC has another meeting scheduled in the building at 1:00 p.m., so we will need to be out of the building by 12:30.  Hope to see you there.

Summer Meeting coming up!

  1. Our next meeting will be Saturday July 16; 20ll at 10:00 a.m. at the Bountiful Davis Art Center 745 South Main in Bountiful.  Sandra Starley will be our guest speaker.  She does a fabulous trunk show with many antique quilts and lots of information about textiles and how to date quilts, well worth your time.  When I was given the information that she was going to be our guest, there was no mention of her fees or requirements, so I just planned on her coming.  I have since learned her usually fee is $400 plus mileage, lodging, and 10 appraisals.  Needless to say I was a little surprised.  She reduced the fee to $100 and I have offered to have her stay at my house.  If we can get the 10 appraisals at $35 each lined up, we should come out just fine.  We will set up appointments from 12:30 to 4:30 after the meeting.  Cheryl Barlow will be doing a cathedral window demonstration from 2:00 to 4:00 and other things will be going on that afternoon in the building, so it won’t be to boring waiting for your appraisal.  Please let me know as soon as possible if you want to have a quilt appraised.

  1. We will also be collecting materials for Fran Ogden’s sewing and quilting classes at the school in Council, Idaho.  These kids are learning to sew, to piece, and to machine quilt.  They can use anything from scraps to yardage, tools, thread, patterns or books.  Please keep them in mind if you have anything you no longer need or want.

  1. Emma Dugal of BDAC called and asked me if we could provide about 15 quilts to hang for a show July 29 through September 2.  The art center has been so good to us how could I say no.  I really need someone to volunteer to be in charge of this project. (Our son is getting married July 27th so I am a little nutsier than usual.)  The quilts need to be there by Saturday the 23rd or you can bring them to the meeting on the 16th.  If you want to put a price on your quilt you can, but they take a 40% commission.
