HMQS 2013 Was a Success

Now with HMQS over I need to get my mind on our next meeting. It’s this coming Saturday, May 18.

I hope most of you got a chance to attend HMQS.  We are so fortunate to have such a world class show at our door step. I met people from Europe, Australia, Canada and of course all over the US, who had to travel. The quilts for the judged show, also, came from all over the world.

At the meeting we want to share our experiences from the show, classes, teachers, venders etc. with each other.  Bring projects you started in a class or ideas that were shared by teachers & fellow students or great/fun/useful products you found at the vendor mall and share them with us. I was at the show all 3 days and know that I missed things that you found or saw.

Did you see our booth!!! Thank you to all that contributed their Ghastlie items and a special thanks to Kathryn Lindsey for putting it all together in a wonderful fashion. We had TONS of people stopping to talk and take pictures. It was great exposure for our guild.

Emily Daly will be giving us a presentation on digital design and custom digital printing on fabric. I’m looking forward to finding out about this new technique.

Ok, 10am this Saturday at the Handiquilter Warehouse.

See Ya There,
Gaye

March Meeting Notes

It started with pictures taken for our directory. Then our business included, a report from Sylvia Zobell about the Utah Quilt Guild, membership fees are due this month, she also mentioned National Quilt Day March 16th, Colonial House, and she had fabric available for the BooBee’s project to fight Breast Cancer.

HMQS is just a short few weeks away. If you haven’t signed up for classes, or registered to show a quilt or two, now is the time. There are still challenge kits available for QOV, Riley Blake and Sew Batik. See the www.HMQS.org for details. Volunteers are needed too, and if you volunteer you get to see the show free, all the info is on the website. Remember to take your “Scavenger Hunt” Sheet to the show (I’ve attached a copy). Find the answers and turn it in at our booth for a drawing at the May Meeting.

Our booth theme is anything “Ghastly” bring your items to the show or contact Kathryn Lindsay or myself to arrange for them to get there. If you have signed up to work at our booth you also can get free entry. Check at with us or at the volunteer desk about a volunteer ID tag.

We had our Apron Fashion show. Kathryn Winterton showed her work apron and how damaged it is from the machine, pins etc. Work aprons can not only save our clothes but also streamline our process by holding the tools we use most. There were so many fantastic aprons we voted to have a drawing instead of a vote for the prize.

The HandiQuilter Gals gave a great presentation on Computerized Quilting. How to size and place purchased designs and also how you can digitize you own designs, even copy your freehand work to save it for another project. They had a trunkshow of some of the quilts they have done with the computer. The item that surprised me was that computerized quilting is not faster than manually driven quilting just more exact. Still, I think many of us want to save for a system

After refreshments Renea Haddadin talked about a new direction her shop “Quilts on the Corner” is going. She is stocking several lines of Superior Thread, YLI Thread, Wide Back Fabrics and Longarm Tools and supplies. The shop is in Sandy on Main Street and is worth a visit. Kathryn Lindsey gave us the challenge to share how we quilt rail fence blocks. I’ve attached some of the ideas. If you have more email them to me and I’ll forward them to the group. ( please don’t laugh at my drawing)

Our first “Spotlight” of one of our members was on Chris Robinson. Chris is a native of Utah, and learned basic quilting from her Mom. She has one daughter and had 43 foster children over the years. Three of her foster daughters are quilters, one an award winning longarm quilter in Houston. Chris has had a HQ16 for about a year and quilts for herself and friends.

We had a review of new books added to our library and a brief tools you can purchase at “Harbor Freight”. I’ve attached my favorite quilting tools found at the hardware stores.

We finished with “Show and Tell” and got to see wonderful quilts made or quilted by our members.

Mark your calendars for our next meeting on May 18th. Our guest speaker will be Emilie Daly who is a digital fabric designer – a new direction in fabric production. We will also recap our experiences at HMQS, and have our Scavenger Hunt drawing. Bring any cool tools, ideas or tips you learn at the show and, of course, show and tell.

March Meeting

Hey!

Hi All,

Just a quick reminder that our March meeting  will be on the 9th due to National Quilt day festivities on our normal meeting day.

Be prepared to have your picture taken for our directory and bring your apron for our fashion show. Also bring any Ghastly items already made for use in our HMQS booth. We will have a sign-up sheet for our booth too, so look at your calendar.

The program this month is on Computerized Quilting.  And we will share quilt motifs we use on Rail Fence blocks. (Block pictures are attached to draw out your motifs).

Share any tools, tips or ideas with everyone and earn a chance in our Show and Tell Challenge by bringing something to show. **

See You There
Gaye

** My tip of the month - - - Take a picture of the beginning of the quilt as you work on it, by the time you get to the other end you will be able to reference the picture without unwinding the whole quilt to remember exactly what you did.

January Meeting Notes

We had a great meeting in January with a Hawaiian Theme. Julie
Kaleikini and Pauline Vogel gave us a wonderful program on the history
and traditional construction of Hawaiian quilts along with a trunk show
of their quilts. They usually teach at Morman Handicraft and quilt
shows in Utah such as Quilt Fest, if you want more info.

Some of us dressed in our “Hawaiian Tourist” apparel, we had a vote
and awarded a prize for the best. Our refreshments reflected the
Hawaiian theme too.

We recognized the members who made 2012 a success, especially Val
Gines, who did a flawless job as our President. Then the new board:
Gaye Ryon, President, Darlene Walker, President elect & Cindy Stokes,
Sec/Treasure were introduced. Kathryn Lindsey will continue giving us
her wonderful education sessions and DeAnn Oliekan will also continue
as our Librarian. We had reports from the Utah Quilt Guild, HMQS, the
kids from Idaho.

Kathryn Lindsey, after getting lei’d when she arrived, gave us a lesson
on S(i)TDs! Using Stitch in the Ditch really makes piecing and
applique motifs pop. She gave us ideas on techniques and different
rulers.

We discussed having a display book at our booth at HMQS to show off
our work and promote our businesses by area. If you want to be part of
this bring an 8x10 picture of a quilt or a collage of quilts, your business
card and maybe your price list or an info page on your business.
A few new things to look forward to is our birthday basket, meeting
challenges and a year-end drawing that you will put your name in for a
for each show and tell you bring to meetings.

We voted to change the date for March’s meeting to the 9th because
many of our members are participating in National Quilt Day festivities.
If you would like to attend or get more info the url is:

On the 9th, Bring your favorite work apron. We will have a fashion show
and vote on the best apron. Extra points if you have one made of
“Ghastley Fabric” to wear in our HMQS Booth. If you have ideas for
“tips, tricks and favorite tools” bring them or email them to me (I’ll
include them in the agenda)

Our program on the 9th will be on Computerized Quilting, given by the
Handiquilter girls.

In an effort to get to know each other better, Mindy Kirton, our
webmaster, will be taking your picture as you arrive, for a group
directory.

See ya then,
Gaye

We're going to the Islands!

Hi Everyone,

Our January Meeting will be on January 19, 2013, 10a to 1p at the Handiquilter
warehouse. 445 North 700 West, North Salt Lake, Utah.

I don’t know about you but I’m already tired of snow, snow, snow. We need to
bring a little sunshine into this cold winter. Our guest speakers this month will be
Julie Kaleikini and Pauline Vogel. They are experts on Hawaiian Quilting, it’s
history and techniques. So to fight the cold, under your snow clothes, wear a
bright floral or aloha shirt and bring your flip flops. The best dressed “Hawaiian
tourist” will win a prize.

Refreshments will have a Hawaiian theme too.

As always bring show and tell (my personal favorite part of our meetings). If you
have Hawaiian Quilting – you guessed --- bring it.

I’ve attached a Member Info Sheet for you to fill out and bring to the meeting.
We want to get to know everyone better and find hidden talents within our group
and need input about what you want.

Looking forward to seeing you there,
Gaye
